I hinted at this new quilt a few days ago, but now that it has been sent off in the mail, I can reveal it!
The Baby Patchwork Owl Quilt:
I have two friends who are expecting their first babies soon, so I just had to make a little something. This is indeed little! Teeny tiny, really. Let’s call it a carseat quilt, or mini play mat, or lovey, and call it a day 🙂
All that was needed was a charm pack (a pack of 42 5-inch squares) for the front, three fat quarters for the back, and some white fabric for the sashing and binding. I used the same quilt-as-you-go technique that I learned from the Crazy Shortcut Quilts book.
My friend has a Noah’s Ark theme for the nursery, so I wanted fabrics that featured animals. I bought the Ten Little Things charm pack on eBay, along with the Little Critters fat quarters for the backing.
Each block was a 2 x 3 rectangle of charm squares. I quilted X’s and squares on alternating squares within each block. Then I joined the six blocks together with sashing. I like how you can see the quilting on the back, too.
This is my second completed quilt, and although I always tweak quilt patterns a little bit, this is the first time I just sat down with the fabric and didn’t use a tutorial or pattern to design the layout. That’s why it’s so simple! But I like the simple patchwork, and I hope my friend’s new baby boy does too!
A few more details…
I even got to use my new label maker!
