It’s been a while since I’ve updated the art on our walls… because after the initial frenzy of arranging and hanging last year, I didn’t have anything new to add! I didn’t even intend to decorate last week, but one thing led to another and I ended up hanging a nautical-themed collage of artwork.
Let’s start at the beginning… My Dad always brings back souvenirs from his business trips abroad (thanks, Dad!) and lately he’s been bringing me different kinds of fabric from his travels. (Which, by the way, is just as cool as it sounds!) A wrap from Hawaii, a handkerchief from Japan, and from his most recent trip to China a beautiful silk scarf.
When you enter our apartment, there’s a long and narrow hallway that leads to all the rooms in the back (I say “all” like there are a ton of rooms… there are exactly four, including the bathroom.) I’ve had a lot of trouble deciding how to decorate the hallway because it’s so long. There are so many awkward angles that it’s really difficult to get a decent pic of the space. There’s an especially awkward little wall behind the kitchen and leading to the bathroom (and the hallway closet).
I thought the silk would fill the space next to the bathroom perfectly, so I sewed little loops at the top two corners and hung it up. Unfortunately, it was slightly too big for the space. The scarf droops and just doesn’t look as pretty as it could. So, the silk got folded up again until I can figure out another place for it.
By then, the idea of having some sort of art on that blank wall had become a bee in my bonnet. And where does one go with a crafty bee in one’s bonnet? To Pinterest, of course! I went to my “Inspring Art” board and gathered a few of my favorite ideas, and went to town.
Five in all, different sizes, different frames.
I think they came together pretty well, and now I have a happy nautical montage every time I pass by!
