Whenever I meet up with my book group, I always get lots of great book recommendations. So this week at our meeting, as I was adding new titles to my GoodReads account, I noticed that I have five books on my Currently Reading list… yikes! Sometimes I read one book at a time, but usually I have a couple different books to read when the mood strikes… but I didn’t realize that I had let it get out of hand. So now I’m trying to finish up a few of them this weekend so I can really focus on the next book I start.
It’s hard to believe May is around the corner (next week!) so most of these books will show up in my monthly reading log when I post it next week, but here’s a look at what I’m reading right now:
Breakfast Book: The Casual Vacancy, by J.K. Rowling
Yes, I’m still reading this! I got it immediately when it came out in September 2012– how could I not? It’s the first book that JK Rowling has written since the Harry Potter series! There was buzz! I was counting down the days! –but then… meh. It didn’t catch my interest at all. The whole plot revolves around this guy who dies in the first chapter, and over one hundred fifty pages go by before the funeral even takes place. But I’m determined to get through it, so I’m reading it on the weekends again when I eat breakfast. I think if I really want to finish it, though, I’m going to need to power through in one hours-long session late one night. I just need to find the stamina.
Kindle eBook – How to Be a Woman, by Caitlin Moran
I’m finding these feminist rants funny, but not exactly spellbinding (aren’t you proud of me for resisting the use of this phrase for JK Rowling’s book?) This is my Kindle book for the bus ride, but I actually put it on hold to start another book.
Kindle eBook: Sharp Knives, Boiling Oil: My Year of Dangerous Cooking with Four Year Olds, by Kim Foster
I forget where I read a recommendation for this book, but it’s exactly the kind of premise that grabs me – a food blogger teaches a class of pre-schoolers to cook in an inner city public school. Everything I could want – food writing, memoir, parenting, public schools, little kids – it covers almost all of my favorite things to read about. I’m enjoying it so far – a fun detour before I get back to my other kindle read.
Audio Book – Leviathan Wakes, by James S.A. Corey
I’m not sure I should count this one, because I think it might have been abandoned. Sam is infamous for starting long and epic books or series and never, ever finishing them. He got all excited about listening to audio books as a way to actually finish one. So he picked this one out, and it’s supposed to be really good… but it just hasn’t caught our interest. I think sci-fi might be better read in your head than out loud.
Children’s Lit: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, by Catherynne M. Valente
I started this on a whim a couple weekends ago. The writing is very unique – it reminds me of Peter Pan’s otherworldliness – but I haven’t picked it up again since. It’s more of a rainy afternoon kind of indulgence, and we’ve had mostly sunshine lately. But when I do take the time to sit down, I’m looking forward to delving in again!
