Project Pinterest: Pin-spired Outfits in the Real World

Today I’m celebrating the fact that I actually wore a pin-spired outfit this week!

It’s one thing to pin a bunch of cute outfits, it’s another to “shop my closet” to replicate the outfits, but it’s quite another to actually wear them… actually putting items together, wearing them out in public for work and life outside of the internet.  But this week I really did it!

The Amateur Librarian // Pinterest Project

My inspiration was pinned some months ago, and I even tried it out last fall when I put together a post of pin-spirational outfits… but now, a season later, I actually wore it!  And I got compliments and felt cute all day!

Even though I put together a bunch of outfits inspired by pins, it didn’t translate to wearing any of the outfits out in the wild of real life.  I think my issues in following through after that post was that I didn’t love the individual pieces of clothing, so I didn’t love them in other outfits either.  That striped shirt was too boxy, those black leggings are too thin to wear as pants, I don’t like belting cardigans, etc.   As much fun as it was to play dress-up and mimic those Pinterest looks, I never actually wore any of them outside of that afternoon.  And as I’ve started to take a closer look at my closet, most of those items have actually ended up donated to the thrift store because I just didn’t love them.

So in my effort to pin some realistic style inspiration… here are some recent pins I’ve found.  I’m trying to look for ideas based on items I already own, in outfits that I’d actually be comfortable wearing.  Baby steps!

I don’t have a mustard green cardigan or burgundy heels, but I like the idea of simple black and white paired with a colorful cardigan and pearls.  It’s pretty similar to what I wear for a lot of work outfits, so I think I could pull it off.

I have a few floral skirts that I don’t wear very often, and I like the idea of belting a longer white shirt on top of a skirt.  I really like the army green color, although I don’t own anything in that color.

I usually don’t think of cardigans as tops by themselves, but I like how simple a buttoned black cardigan looks with a statement skirt and (of course) pearls.

I own a few print dresses, and it would be fun to try to style one in different ways to transition from work to weekend to a night out.  I think I like the weekend look the best – jean jacket, scarf, and sandals.

Another print dress, this time with turquoise accessories.  I don’t think I would wear the shoes or purse, but I do like the idea of a black or navy print dress with the pop of turquoise jewelry.

I have a navy lace shift dress and a skinny brown belt – I should pair them together!

I own a striped dress, though not exactly like this, and a green cardigan, though not exactly the same shade.  I wouldn’t have thought to pair them together, but it could be a great look, especially with the brown belt and wooden jewelry.

I don’t have a coral blazer, but what I like most is the color combo – white (or lace) top, coral, and turquoise.  Like the classic red/white/blue combo but a little fresher.

Brown and black together, with turquoise jewelry.  I like this color combo a lot!

Grey pants – check, blue print top – check, coral cardigan – check, skinny belt – check!  I have all the ingredients for this work outfit, I just need to put it together.

LBD with brown belt, pendant necklace, and oatmeal knit cardigan.  I definitely like this neutral combo!

Lots of ideas… now just to put them into action!  Once again, hooray for Pinterest!

  1. I know just how you feel, it’s hard to think up new ways of wearing the clothes in your closet, even with Pinterest to help I always seem to wear the same things together! I think lack of time has a lot to do with it though, or at least that’s the excuse I’m going with! 😛
