City Sights: Arcade Museum

While we were at Fisherman’s Wharf for the Independence Day festivities, we had some time to kill before the fireworks cruise left the dock.  I had never noticed the Arcade Museum tucked behind the seafood restaurants on Pier 41, but there it is – and it’s a hidden gem!

It would be a great break from the crowds if you have little kids with you, but it’s fun for adults too.  Packed together in one big room is a mix of old and new arcade games, with a few historical exhibits as well.  I loved the old games – viewfinder slide shows from the 1906 Earthquake (similar to those found in the Cable Car Museum) or the first moving pictures, mechanical vignettes with moving parts, player pianos, elaborate miniature replicas, structures made entirely of toothpicks by Alcatraz inmates… they were all fascinating!

I think my favorite were the “fortune tellers.”  I’m holding Grandmother to her prediction… I sure do hope I will be purchasing a house some time in the future!

Sam got his fortune told by a “wizard,” but did not take his advice to place a wager… I guess we’ll never know.

As you leave the museum, there’s a great view of the bay right outside.  It was an unexpected surprise to stumble upon this little museum, and I had a blast!  We wandered in with 15 minutes to spare, but we could’ve spent much longer just looking at everything.  Just one warning – our $5 of quarters didn’t last long!

More city sights coming soon as we explore San Francisco!
