Project Pinterest: Quilt Inspiration

I have a new quilt idea that’s taking up headspace lately, a new work in progress that I’m really excited about.  Usually a work in progress report involves some actual work done… but in this case, I’m still in the fabric gathering stage.  I’ve got plenty of ideas for it, though, and they’ve been running through my head for the past week or so.  So I thought I’d share some of the pins I’ve been looking at for inspiration.

This quilt will be a gift… so I’ll keep the who/what/why details anonymous until it’s been gifted.  I love secret projects!

With the recipient in mind, I’d like to go more modern than I usually do and incorporate certain elements that speak to our history.  I’ll probably keep it small, more of a lap quilt or wall hanging size, so hopefully I won’t be stressing about the quilting when I’m finishing up at the last minute (just being realistic here… I’m almost guaranteed to stress about deadlines, even self-imposed ones).  And I’d like to learn a couple new techniques for improvisational blocks, since I haven’t dabbled in “modern” quilting very much.

(For the pins below, all sources link to the original blog pos if available, but you can find all the pins on my Quilts board, if you’re interested.)

I’m thinking wonky words (inspired by Word Play Quilts, by Tonya Ricucci)…

maybe with some cat prints as the center block (I especially love Laurel Burch’s cats) …

and red/warm tones for the color scheme.  I’m thinking deep fall reds and golden yellows, but I haven’t decided on a background/neutral color yet.

Red and white is classic, but not quite the look I’m going for.  Normally I might go with red and blue for a fun/vintage contrast, but at the moment it’s not what I have in mind… I wonder if red/yellow and grey would look right together?  But maybe grey as the background color, instead of the white/cream below…

So those are my scattered thoughts on this work in progress.  I’m in the fabric gathering stage, and I’ve been hunting for deals on eBay for more fabric to add to what I already have on hand.  I found a really sweet vintage flat sheet that will be perfect for the backing.

I think I’ll be ready to start sewing soon, and I’ll keep you updated as the quilt evolves!  Once again, hooray for Pinterest!  Always handy for a little inspiration.
