Last week I asked where we should go for our next San Francisco adventure… and you picked the Sutro Bath Ruins! So that’s exactly where we went this weekend! Although I’d put this sight off for so long due to the distance, it really wasn’t bad at all!
We started out with lunch on Polk Street… you have to take advantage of the sun around here, so we ate outside!
We had to walk a bit to get to the right bus stop, but then it was a straight shot and about 30 more minutes until the bus stopped right in front of Land’s End Lookout.
The lookout houses a gift shop, cafe, facts about the Sutro Baths and nearby Cliff House, and of course… spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.
We scoped out the Lookout, then headed down toward the ruins. The Sutro Bath House was built in the earlier 1900’s until a fire in the 1960’s. The ruins are still there, with the Cliff House overlooking from a short distance. Now it’s a landmark and open to the public.
The best part about the ruins are that you can explore to your heart’s content. There are a few trails and stairs built into the cliffs, but other than that you’re on your own. You can clamber up the sides of the bowl and tiptoe up and down the narrow ledges left by the crumbling buildings and old swimming pools. And all with the ocean as your backdrop.
On one side, there is a cave that leads underneath the cliff. Inside, you can hear the roar of the ocean echoing inside and see the waves lap up against the bottom.
It was a beautiful day to be by the ocean… we even saw a photo shoot going on!
The Coastal Trail winds up toward more great views. There’s a wide pavilion with panoramic views of the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.
See that speck of orange…? That would be a lone guitar player just hanging out on the cliff. Not sure how he got there…
We continued up the trail, underneath the twisted trees.
The scenery was amazingI (Haha, I was goofing around and Sam caught this candid. Perfect for a speech bubble!)
We stopped at the cafe for a snack and one more view before heading home.
We had a beautiful day at the Sutro Bath ruins… it was great to have sunny weather and a pretty quick bus ride to and from this cool landmark. I could definitely see us coming back when we want a dose of the ocean and some exploration.
More city sights coming soon as we explore San Francisco!
