Time for an update!
I know it’s super clichéd to want to organize everything now that it’s a New Year, but I’m taking advantage of the urge to purge! I had four major projects I need to tackle… and funnily enough, they all start with the F sound! My Floss, Freezer, Files, and Photos need to be organized!
Below, an update in order of How-Much-I-Was-Dreading-It:
(1) Floss. Now that I’m cross stitching again, I need to manage all the floss I’ve accumulated. I finished winding the last of the bobbins – I just might need a new box! This task took me longer than I thought… a couple afternoons of just sitting and winding, but it was sort of relaxing. And it’s awesome to have all my floss in one place instead of a tangled mess!
In the vein of organization… I keep my current project (right now the Once Upon a Time sampler, which will last all year) in a tin – notions, needlebook, and all the floss on a ring. I keep the fabric off the frame in between stitching, folded in a plastic bag (originally a package for curtains). Works for me!
(2) Freezer. Hallelujah, the freezer is cleaned out! I cleared out all the leftovers that were freezer burned, and while I was at it reorganized the rest of the contents too. This task actually didn’t take as long as I thought… I had everything cleaned out and washed in about an hour total. I hate throwing out food that’s past the expiration date, but it definitely reminds me that I need buy only what we’ll actually eat… which, apparently, is not shrimp fried rice!
(3) Files. Done! I knew it had to be done, but I was recently re-inspired by Andrea Dekker’s post about consolidating paper files and condensing as much as possible. I realized how much paper clutter really didn’t need to be saved, so I majorly purged and kept only what was really necessary. I thought it would take me a whole afternoon, but just a couple hours quality time with my label maker was all it took! I’m super pumped that we’re prepared for tax season and the task is finally behind me! I’m trying to keep on top of it now so I don’t have another towering stack to deal with in a year!
(4) Photos. Still working on it. I cleared out a lot of photos on my computer that I don’t need – so many, many duplicates, and a lot of blog photos that are uploaded to WordPress so I don’t really need copies on my computer. Doing that alone freed up some space, but using up my startup disk is still an issue… so I’m trying to be more conscious of how many photos I save to the computer, and I’m still looking for an online alternative. (I have an external hard drive, but Sam and I have both used it and I don’t even know what’s saved on it anymore… and in the past Sam’s files have taken precedence over mine when needed, so I’m always leery of relying on the external hard drive alone.) So… still working on this one. And the photo yearbooks… yeah, still “in progress,” aka… I need to get started!
It’s a huge weight off my mind to get these tasks off my list! Now to get working on those photos… Wish me luck!
