If there’s anything I learned from Gretchen Rubin’s book Better than Before, it’s that I fit the Obliger personality almost 100%, and if I want to create a habit (even for something I enjoy doing) I usually need some sort of external accountability. So when I saw Pen and Paint‘s Sketch a Day challenge on Instagram, I knew it would be a fun (and effective!) way to insert some doodling into my daily life. It’s not necessarily a habit I want to keep up year-round, but it was fun for 30 days, and I like these low-pressure mini challenges once in a while.
December may not have been the best month to add another challenge to my life… but it was low stakes and still fun! Plus, it also made me feel like I was participating in the “holiday spirit” while I couldn’t enjoy my normal decorations in the midst of packing. I didn’t worry about having the perfect materials, and used whatever I had on hand… and since everything was packed up, that mostly meant post-its and scraps of paper (including a Christmas letter on green paper, ha!). This new year is all about settling in and enjoying daily life without worrying about the pursuit of perfection!
Here’s a look at 31 doodles from December:
