True Blue Quilt
Finally, another finish! Secret sewing is fun but I’m always dying to share pics by the time it’s finished and gifted, especially now that I’m averaging a finished quilt every 3 months of so.
This baby quilt went to some longtime friends to add a little cozy to their home. S & D have a gorgeous old home they’re renovating (I’m always hoping that Home Sweet History blog is back soon!) and after following their progress via Instagram the mix of vintage and modern, along with moody paint colors, inspired a palette of blues and greys.
This quilt started with the True Love mini quilt (free pattern via Canoe Ridges) that I made from blue scraps at the MCMQG Retreat in February, and then it sat waiting for inspiration. I finally decided to add some negative space around the patchwork heart, then create three more patchwork quadrants to fill out a square big enough to be a lap-sized quilt. I used Crazy Mom Quilt’s tutorial for 36-patch blocks with 5″ strips of coordinating blues and greys to make 27″-blocks.
I sent the quilt top off to Studio V for the longarm quilting and love the texture from the navy blue bubbles quilting! I would probably go with a lower-contrast thread color like grey or baby blue if I had to do it over again, but I like how the dark blue stands out against the simple patchwork. After wrestling with quilting on my basic home machine for the past few years, it’s such a treat to hand it over with just the binding to finish it up for good. One of these days I’ll invest in a higher-end machine that might make quilting more manageable… but until then, longarm quilting is the way to go for me!
A few progress pics:
No matter what happens in life, I’m thankful for friends like S & D. Even when it’s hard to know what to say after sad events, making something always helps, and lots of love went into every stitch of this quilt. S and I have known each other since we were toddlers at the same daycare, and we’ve kept in touch throughout the years… if you want to get sappy, I guess you could say our friendship is the true blue kind… or something like that 🙂
Cheers to many more years of friendship!
I’m linking up to Crazy Mom Quilts for Finish Friday 🙂
