It’s hard to believe that this week marks one year since we moved into our first house. We started the building process in May 2015 and moved in at the very end of the year. And in the year since, so much has happened! It’s weird to think that when we moved in, I had no idea that I’d be pregnant in a couple months and spend the next year preparing to meet Amelia.
In honor of our housiversary, here’s a throwback to the very last post I wrote in the Foundation to Finished series… my favorite one to write!
And if you want to read up on the whole process, here’s the monthly blow-by-blow of building new construction (spoiler alert: it was slow going until everything happened at once at the very end!):
Woohoo, the post I’ve been waiting to write all year, ever since we started looking for a house!
December marked the last month of progress, and we’re officially all moved in. Even with a couple snafus like the wrong backsplash tile installed, the shower floor tile being discontinued, one missing cabinet handle on backorder, etc., everything worked out in the end. In record time, all the little details fell into place – the countertops, paint. molding, hardwoods and carpet, screened-in porch, appliances, etc. until finally, it was all done! We did an orientation with the builders in mid-December so we could walk through, get to know all the appliances, and point out any fixes before the final walkthrough before the loan closed. On Christmas Eve’s Eve we did the final walkthrough and signed on the dotted line about fifty million times. Whew, that was nerve wracking… and suddenly we were home owners!
Of course the fun had only just begun… we needed to get into the house, but first came the holidays. We went to MS to visit Sam’s family for the long weekend, then came back on Sunday to meet my parents and finalize the game plan. My family drove up to help with the move (bless them until eternity) which helped lighten the load AND the mood so I didn’t feel too frantic 🙂
Here’s a quick timeline of this week:
Monday – My parents helped with all the odds and ends (appliance deliveries! internet! utilities! sealing the grout! last minute packing!) while we worked from home. Everything went pretty smoothly, whew!
Tuesday – The movers came mid-morning and we were done several hours later. After dinner, we brought the cats to the new house and they settled in.
Today – My family stopped by one last time to say goodbye before driving back home, and as much as I’d like to be unpacking we both need to work from home today. Unfortunately the internet has not arrived yet… so I’m typing this from a Starbucks (and working too, of course!)
Let the unpacking begin! We couldn’t be happier, and it’s such a grand way to start the new year of 2016!
Here’s the very last batch of progress pics:
Cheers to 2016!
