High Five for Friday

What a week! In honor of the Black Lives Matter movement, I’ve been keeping my eyes, ears and heart open by listening, supporting, donating and reading. Today I’m sharing 5 books that have helped open my mind and 5 books that are coming my way to read next.

Sing, Unburied, Sing, by Jesmyn Ward

Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Becoming, by Michelle Obama

The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas

Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson

White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, by Robin Diangelo

How We Fight for Our Lives, by Saeed Jones

Well-Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves, edited by Glory Edim

A Kids Book About Racism, by Jeloni Memory

You Matter, by Christian Robinson

Side note: I’ve been rethinking my policy of using Amazon affiliate links, so I’m not adding direct links to the titles above. If you’re interested in seeking them out, check out Bookshop.org to order online, and you can support your local independent bookstore at the same time! If you prefer audiobooks, Libro.FM is another way you can support local bookstores. I am trying to make an effort to limit my spending on Amazon (especially for books) and support local and black-owned businesses whenever possible and this is one way to do that!

  1. Thank you for the suggested reading. And your efforts to redirect economic support towards those businesses that need it.
